The development is heading in one direction

At the beginning of 2023, there were just over 1,200 electric cars driving around in Sønderborg Municipality. Today, that number has surpassed 5,000. In the second quarter of 2025, as many as 88 % of car buyers in the Sønderborg area chose an electric vehicle when purchasing a new car.

One of the main drivers behind this market trend is technological progress in electric vehicles. Modern EVs can travel further on a single charge, charging stations are popping up everywhere, and the recycling of lithium batteries and other car parts is constantly improving. At the same time, electric cars are charged with increasingly greener electricity as renewable energy capacity expands.

Moreover, it has become easier to charge your electric car across the entire EU, which has adopted a regulation to make charging points more accessible and prices more transparent. This means that all new fast and ultra-fast chargers installed after April 2024 will accept credit card payments, eliminating the previous need to download a separate app.

The electricity used to power electric vehicles is expected to be completely green by 2029.

Is the electric car green?

An electric car uses more than 80 % of the energy stored in its battery for propulsion. Generally, producing an electric car results in higher CO₂ emissions than producing a gasoline or diesel car. However, this difference is offset after driving about 11,000 kilometers in an electric car. The electricity used to power electric vehicles is expected to be completely green by 2029, which means driving an electric car will only become greener in the future.
