41 times around the Earth. That’s how many kilometers we in the Sønderborg area need to reduce our annual driving by in order to reach our goal of cutting CO₂ emissions from transport by around 22 percent. We know that many of you find it hard to do without a car. But there are several ways you can make your travel habits a bit greener.
Take the bike
Choosing the bike over the car offers a range of benefits – for both you and the environment. First and foremost, cycling is a great way to improve your health. It boosts your fitness, can reduce stress, and puts you in a good mood. At the same time, it’s a financial win as you save money on fuel, maintenance, and parking.
From an environmental perspective, cycling is one of the most sustainable modes of transport. Bikes don’t emit any CO₂, and by choosing to cycle, you help reduce air pollution and traffic jams. In urban areas, cycling is often faster than driving, especially during rush hour when traffic and parking are a hassle.
All in all, cycling offers a unique combination of health benefits, cost savings, and environmental advantages – what’s not to like!
Choose an electric car
Electric cars are having a positive impact on the Sønderborg area, saving energy, lowering CO₂ emissions, and improving air quality compared to cars running on diesel or petrol.
While the manufacturing of an electric car, including its battery, has some environmental impact, an electric car has a proven lower CO₂ footprint over its lifetime. Transitioning from fossil-fueled to electric-powered cars is therefore an important element in our journey towards CO₂-neutrality by 2029.
In recent years, the Sønderborg area has seen a significant increase in the number of electric cars on our roads. Today, four out of every five new cars registered in the municipality are electric. Click the link below to read more about how the transition is progressing.
Carpool
19 out of 20 commuters drive alone during rush hour. This is according to data from the company Nabogo, which has created an app that makes carpooling much easier.
There are many benefits to choosing carpooling:
-
The more people in the car, the more CO₂ you save.
-
Carpooling means fewer cars on the road, reducing traffic chaos and air pollution.
-
The trip becomes cheaper for everyone, as the cost is shared.
-
As a passenger, you can use the time productively by reading, knitting, working, or relaxing.
-
Carpooling is also a great opportunity for networking and building new relationships.
