Your town has said yes to district heating! This means that you will be able to get stable, green heat in the near future. In this guide, you can learn more about what district heating is, see how far your town is in the process, and find out what to do with your oil or gas boiler in the meantime.
What is district heating?
District heating works by centrally heating large volumes of water, which is then distributed through a network of pipes to the houses and buildings connected to the district heating system.
With district heating, you get more climate-friendly heat from green energy sources such as electricity, straw, wood chips, solar energy, and surplus heat from local companies.
The goal for the Sønderborg area is for district heating to be completely CO₂-neutral by 2029, using renewable energy sources.
By switching to district heating, you significantly reduce your carbon footprint compared to individual heating systems using fossil fuels like oil or gas.
Benefits of district heating
Easy, convenient, and future-proof
Once district heating is installed, it is very easy and requires virtually no maintenance. In fact, all you have to do is enjoy this affordable and green heating solution.
Stable and adaptable
District heating uses a wide range of energy sources, making it a secure and flexible heating option.
The combination of energy sources also ensures that you get a competitive price for your heat—regardless of the season or market fluctuations.
A more climate-friendly source of heat
An oil boiler emits an average of 5,600 kg of CO₂ per year, while a gas boiler emits around 3,800 kg.
In the Sønderborg area, we are working actively to make our energy CO₂-neutral by the end of 2029.
Cleaner air quality
Oil and gas boilers also contribute to local air pollution through the release of harmful substances such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
By switching to district heating, you help improve the local air quality.

What about my oil or gas boiler?
In the Sønderborg area, we are working actively to replace all oil and gas boilers by the end of 2029.
However, your situation is a bit special, as you live in an area where district heating is on its way.
Therefore, if you currently have an oil or gas boiler, we recommend that you wait to replace it until district heating becomes available.
We also advise against installing an individual heat pump in the meantime.
