Carpooling is one of the keys to a greener transport. That’s why Sønderborg Municipality decided in 2024 to invest in the development and operation of the locally created app, Nabogo, which reduces the number of cars on the road, lowers CO₂ emissions, and strengthens community ties.

In the Sønderborg area, there are just over 40,000 private cars on the road, and most trips are made with only one person behind the wheel. This leaves a vast number of unused seats filling the roads every day.

In 2024, Sønderborg Municipality decided to tackle this issue by investing in the development and operation of a new carpooling app called Nabogo.

The agreement means that the municipality covers the first 10 kilometers of each trip, allowing passengers to ride for free, while drivers receive 10 DKK per passenger. After that, passengers pay the driver 0.75 DKK per kilometer.

For example, a 30-kilometer trip costs the passenger 15 DKK, while the driver earns 25 DKK per passenger.

Nabogo is also collaborating with the Region of Southern Denmark across 15 educational institutions, including Business College Syd, Sønderborg Statsskole, and Alssundgymnasiet. Here, the region covers the first five kilometers for students attending these schools.

The app is free to download and is integrated with Rejseplanen, making it easy to combine a Nabogo ride with bus schedules.

In fact, Nabogo is also a local entrepreneurial success story. It was founded in 2018 by two young entrepreneurs from Als who saw great potential in improving how we coordinate and share rides with others.

First and foremost, carpooling helps reduce unnecessary CO₂ emissions and limits air pollution from fossil-fueled vehicles. Additionally, more shared rides reduce traffic congestion and free up parking spaces. Carpooling also offers economic benefits, as costs can be shared between two or more people. Last but not least, it fosters new connections and strengthens the local community when we share rides.

Carpooling is one of several solutions to reduce CO₂ emissions from transport by 2029. In addition, the Sønderborg area is working to replace fossil-fueled vehicles with electric ones, promote cycling, and improve public transportation.
