How to improve your home’s energy efficiency

You can easily check yourself whether the insulation in your attic should be improved. Start by measuring the thickness of the existing insulation. Morten shows you how in the video.

It’s recommended to have at least 300 mm of insulation in your attic.

If your attic needs insulating and you’re not taking on the project yourself, you should contact an insulation contractor to do the job for you. If it involves insulating up to the roof ridge, insulating knee walls, or working on a flat roof, you should also contact a carpenter or joiner.

Leaky windows and doors can be a significant source of heat loss.

If you want the most energy-efficient windows, the panes should be so-called energy glass – not standard double glazing.

If you’re not sure what type of glass you have in your home, there are two ways to check:

1. Newer windows have information about the glass type printed on the spacer bar between the panes. Look inside between the layers of glass. It’s usually energy glass if it says “Energy” followed by A, B, or C.
2. For older energy glass without markings, you can hold a lit lighter or candle in front of the pane. Morten shows you how in the video.

It’s worth insulating your home’s water and heating pipes. If the current insulation is less than 20 mm thick, it’s a good idea to increase it to at least 40 mm. You can simply add extra insulation on top of the existing one.

If you don’t want to take on the project yourself, you should contact an insulation contractor to do the job for you.

If you insulate an uninsulated cavity wall, you can save around DKK 3,400 annually on your heating bill and reduce your CO2 footprint by 1,000 kg.

You can check the original drawings of your house to see if it has a cavity wall. If you don’t have the drawings, you can find them in the municipality’s building archive.

Your circulation pump can be an energy guzzler, so it’s a good idea to check it.

If the minimum wattage is listed as 50 watts or more, it uses enough electricity that it’s worth replacing – regardless of the pump’s age.

If your circulation pump is over 10 years old, it’s also recommended to replace it.
